BPC-157 explained: a research primer
An in-depth look at Body Protection Compound-157 — how it is thought to work and where it fits within cellular and tissue-repair investigation.
What is BPC-157?
A synthetic pentadecapeptide built from 15 amino acids, BPC-157 (Body Protection Compound-157) represents a partial sequence drawn from a larger protein identified in gastric juice. It carries the CAS number 137525-51-0.
This compound is designated research-use-only (RUO) and has no approval for therapeutic use in humans. Any work involving it must remain within the bounds of the relevant regulations.
Mechanism of action
Evidence from cell-culture and animal studies points to BPC-157 engaging with a number of biological pathways:
- Growth hormone receptor pathways — investigations have looked at how BPC-157 might modulate the GH-receptor signalling cascade, a process tied to cellular growth and repair.
- Nitric oxide (NO) system — a range of studies report an influence on NO production, which contributes to vascular function and tissue perfusion.
- Tendon and ligament fibroblasts — rat-model work has documented quicker collagen reorganisation after tendon damage.
- Gastrointestinal mucosa — given its origin in gastric juice, researchers have examined its cytoprotective action on the intestinal epithelium.
Research model summary
Most of the published literature relies on rodent models — rats or mice. Recurring lines of inquiry cover:
- . Tendon-to-bone healing (Achilles tendon transection models)
- . Muscle recovery following crush injury
- . Intestinal anastomosis healing
- . Corneal wound healing
- . Bone regeneration in fracture models
To date in 2026, no double-blind, placebo-controlled human clinical trial has been finished or published.
Storage and handling
BPC-157 ships as a lyophilized (freeze-dried) powder. When handling it in the lab:
- Keep at −20 °C for long-term storage, or 4 °C short-term (≤ 4 weeks)
- Reconstitute using bacteriostatic water (0.9% benzyl alcohol) or sterile saline
- Do not subject it to repeated freeze-thaw cycles
- Shield it from light and moisture
Purity and quality
Reverse-phase HPLC, carried out independently, confirms German Aminos BPC-157 at ≥ 99% purity. Each batch comes with a Certificate of Analysis (CoA) you can view online, complete with the HPLC chromatogram, mass spectrometry confirmation, and the lot number.
